Digital Hero Book Project: Young People in Sub-Saharan Africa Share Their Struggles and Successes

REPSSI’s Hero Book approach leads groups of children through a series of autobiographical storytelling and art exercises to find solutions to personal and social challenges they face. It has been used throughout sub-Saharan Africa for five years, primarily as a way of providing psychosocial care and support to children affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty, and conflict.

EARTH University Digital Storytelling - Workshop

I took the digital story workshop model and worked it into an elective English course at EARTH University (Costa Rica), where I was a visiting professor from the U.S. My objective was to allow students to tell a story that they felt was important to them. We met for about one hour and 40 minutes a week for about 14 weeks.

Hunter College Foster Youth Workshop - Workshop

These back-to-back three-day workshops were a collaboration between the Center for Digital Storytelling and the Hunter College School of Social Work. They brought together current and former foster youth with case workers to create digital stories about the foster care system. Participants explored what helped them when they were in the system, and what moves and challenges them in their work. You can watch the stories created by Sasha, Kim, and Griffin.
