Digital Hero Book Project: Young People in Sub-Saharan Africa Share Their Struggles and Successes

REPSSI’s Hero Book approach leads groups of children through a series of autobiographical storytelling and art exercises to find solutions to personal and social challenges they face. It has been used throughout sub-Saharan Africa for five years, primarily as a way of providing psychosocial care and support to children affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty, and conflict.

Workshop sponsored by REPSSI, TPO Uganda, and the Center for Digital Storytelling, as part of the Digital Hero Book Project.

The third MassIMPACT Spreading the Stories three and 1/2 day digital storytelling train-the-trainer workshop is hosted graciously by Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (IBA) and the El Batey Technology Center

The students of Melanee Grondahl's writing class planned and executed a premiere of their digital stories for falculty, staff, friends and family, complete with award categories, multiple screening rooms, and popcorn.

As part of the “Learn 2 Teach, Teach 2 Learn” (L2T, T2L) program (and sponsored by MassIMPACT), this project proposes to train high-school urban youth at the South End Technology Center to develop digital storytelling skills, create inspiring movies and explore new venues for dissemination, dialogue and reflection.

You're invited to a unique opportunity to combine hands-on multimedia training and community program capacity building. The program is called Spreading the Stories (sponsored by MassIMPACT) and it's a 3 full day hands-on workshop where you'll create a digital story and discuss how to implement it in your own organizations.

I took the digital story workshop model and worked it into an elective English course at EARTH University (Costa Rica), where I was a visiting professor from the U.S. My objective was to allow students to tell a story that they felt was important to them. We met for about one hour and 40 minutes a week for about 14 weeks.

These back-to-back three-day workshops were a collaboration between the Center for Digital Storytelling and the Hunter College School of Social Work. They brought together current and former foster youth with case workers to create digital stories about the foster care system. Participants explored what helped them when they were in the system, and what moves and challenges them in their work. You can watch the stories created by Sasha, Kim, and Griffin.
