Image Size Recommendations?

Janet, my new ds friend in western MA, had a great question about the best format for images:

"Someone wants me to help them with a ds, but the photos they have are either very small or way too big. How do I need them to be so that they will work if they want to show the story on a big screen? I assume if I make the film for that, i can just shrink it down for the web. Do I tell them resolution: 150 or do I tell them by pixel size or by KB or MB etc.."

And I thought of a piece of the curriculum Sheela is working on for a project at the South End Technology Center in Boston:

Tips for scanning images into the computer

  • Resolution – 300 dpi (dots per inch)

  • File Format – jpeg

  • Layout dimensions – Landscape mode, 4:3

While your photos may all be different shapes and sizes, ultimately they need to fit on a TV or monitor that has a 4 to 3 ratio, a horizontal rectangle. Size your photos to 720 by 480 pixels, standard digital video size. You can also directly crop to a 4:3 ratio.

Any other recommendations for Janet?
