Biography:
Neurologist, now "retired" after 30 years practice in SF Bay area, including Kaiser-Permanente, UCSF, and Stanford. Was co-founder and from 1996-2000 medical director of the Health Program for Performing Artists at UCSF. Have written two books, and am now working on a third, sharing the theme of the role of the hand in human life. The short message of all these books is that the hand is not a puppet pulled by strings in the brain, but is an independent force in cognition and behavior, thought and communication. The human hand and brain are a SYSTEM. Main interests now are education, and I serve on the board of The Big Picture company (www.bigpicture.org/) which runs about 50 small inner city high schools and which has been so successful at getting "lost" kids into college that it is becoming a real force in policy discussions about reforming American education. I've been through the famous Lambert whiz-bang Berkeley weekend and continue to see incentives to try to get better at communicating this way.
