She connects her own life and admiration for a grandmother who always took care of people with her tendency to be needed, and comes to a place of understanding about the importance of being able to watch youth move on.

Griffin's Story

In this story, Griffin shares his sense of feeling alone in the world, after being separated from his family and going into care. He describes how he went through a period of not feeling connected to or understood by anyone, and how he “woke up” after losing important people in his life. Griffin now writes for a magazine for current/former foster youth.

Hunter College Foster Youth Workshop - Workshop

These back-to-back three-day workshops were a collaboration between the Center for Digital Storytelling and the Hunter College School of Social Work. They brought together current and former foster youth with case workers to create digital stories about the foster care system. Participants explored what helped them when they were in the system, and what moves and challenges them in their work. You can watch the stories created by Sasha, Kim, and Griffin.

Sasha writes a letter to her younger brother, telling him how difficult it was for her to be separated from him when they were placed in foster care. She talks about the problems she had in school, about how much she missed her brother, and about the case worker whose presence helped her stay on track.
