Think of the stories that most captured your attention over the past year. What made them so engaging? Often the most successful narratives combine text, video, music, sound, and images to tell a story and make a lasting impression. From today's most compelling documentary films to political messaging to reporting by citizen journalists, storytelling is evolving in this digital age. This course will give you the chance to get creative and practice the art of self-expression using much more than just a pen and paper.

This is the first digital storytelling "textbook" originally created for students in the Center for Digital Storytelling's workshops and has been used throughout the years to help those new to digital storytelling understand the medium and begin the process of making their own digital story.

KQED is a public radio and television broadcasting organization in Northern California, which also provides digital storytelling training through its Digital Storytelling Initiative. KQED also sponsors an annual digital storytelling contest for California high school students.
