Biography:

I am a documentary filmmaker and director of Appalshop’s Community Media Initiative. From its beginnings in 1969 as a media training program for youth in the Appalachian coalfields, Appalshop has grown into an internationally recognized center for community-based film and television production, storytelling theater, cultural celebrations, and community radio. Underlying all of my creative work is the premise that local people are best able to tell their own stories, frame the discourse about issues that matter to their community, and move forward local solutions to local problems. In 2005 my film The Buffalo Creek Flood: An Act of Man was selected by the Librarian of Congress for inclusion in the prestigious National Film Registry. In addition to documentary production, I direct Appalshop’s Community Media Initiative, which offers media training and consults with grassroots groups and public interest organizations to develop and implement communication strategies in support of social and economic justice organizing and policy change. CMI’s media training program in recent years has included a series of Digital Storytelling Workshops with small community development organizations in the Delta region of Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas.
